What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

Mental health issues are a little more complex to identify, have diagnosed and treat than physical health issues. When we are physically hurt, we can typically identify that quickly, and know that we require medical assistance in some way. From at-home headache remedies to surgery, there’s a greater understanding of what the process is for physical ailments. When it comes to mental health, it’s more mirky. We don’t always know our mental health status, or at least the extent of it, immediately and it can take some time to recognise that professional help is needed. This uncertainty often continues after diagnosis of a mental health disorder; what to do once you know why you feel how you feel? What is the best treatment route for you, specifically? What happens if you get it wrong? Well, there is a process that exists to help you along the road to improving or managing mental health, and it comes in the form of a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). Here’s what you need to know about them.

What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

As the name suggests, it’s a personalised plan put together for anyone diagnosed with a mental health disorder, created by your medical practitioner. The plan will state the mental health issue you’re experiencing and a clear plan of treatment, including all areas of agreed upon treatments applicable to your specific circumstance (these are not one-size-fits-all plans): psychology support, medication, complementary treatments, lifestyle habits and support contacts such as local mental health services. The plan is not a stagnant one, either. As you work through your treatment plan, you can have it adjusted to suit changing circumstances, what is working and what isn’t working, your personal experience with the plan and any other factor that might arise. The plan is made to get you on track with positive mental health, and iterates in whatever way is required to get you there.  mental health services newcastle

How to get a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

To be eligible for a Mental Health Treatment Plan you need to have been diagnosed by a GP or mental health practitioner. Typically, the plans are designed for people suffering from anxiety, stress and depression, while also being applicable to those with schizophrenia and bipolar.

Obtaining an MHTP will allow you access to applicable rebates.

What are the benefits of a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

Having a MHTP allows you access to the support you need from a psychologist to help work through the feelings and reactions that are creating hurdles in your life. You will be entitled to a rebate on the cost of fees; there are still some out of pocket expenses, but the benefits are worth the investment. It is also a wonderful support for anyone who is opting out of medication-based treatments.
